Kelowna Community Fridge finds new home at hair salon

Fridge finds new home

The Kelowna Community Fridge has a new home.

The 24/7 fridge pantry for anyone who needs it will now be hosted at Burke Hair Lounge downtown at 515 Lawrence Avenue.

A soft launch of the fridge and pantry space will be happening Feb. 1, with a grand re-opening happening in the coming weeks.

The previous fridge location at the Unitarians Church closed on Dec. 30, 2022 due to renovations.

“I’m so excited to work with KCF," Burke Hair Salon said in a statement.

“We are in such a central, accessible area, surrounded by the best neighbours and community. I can’t wait to see The Kelowna Community Fridge thrive in its new home.”

The community fridge is 100 per cent volunteer operated and relies on trusting people to know their own needs, offering judgment-free access to food with as few barriers as possible.

There is no paperwork to fill out and no proof of identity, residency, or income needed. They aim to help anyone who needs food. During the time hosted at church, the fridge was regularly filled and emptied many times a day, sometimes as often as several times per hour.

You can support the Kelowna Community Fridge by donating food at any time, contributing financially at opencollective.com/kelowna-community-fridge, or becoming a volunteer.
