Canadian Tire to take over former Kelowna Costco site

Canadian Tire on the move

Canadian Tire will soon be on the move.

The Kelowna store has plans to move a few blocks up the highway into the former Costco location at highways 97 and 33.

The planned move came to light after Canadian Tire submitted plans to city hall for a development permit on the former Costco site.

Canadian Tire has been at its current location at Highway 97 and Leckie Road for several decades.

Drawings submitted to city planners indicate the current warehouse will be expanded to 179,000 square feet, including about 107,000 square feet of ground floor retail and14,000 square feet in the service centre.

The present Canadian Tire is listed at 83,000 square feet.

Costco moved from its former location into a new, larger store on Baron Road in February of last year.

The former Costco site was then sold in April to Victor Projects, a local development company for $31.2 million.

There is no indication whether the Canadian Tire gas bar will also be moving.

A potential move date was not mentioned.

Because the application will require sign off from the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, it will also require city council's approval.
