Buy diamonds, save lives

Castanet and Premier Jewellery and Loans annual diamond earring fundraiser in support of the Kelowna Women's Shelter is back for its seventh year.

Built by a goldsmith at Premier Jewellery and Loans, this year's diamonds are a pair of 1.22 carats custom-made diamond halos with butterfly backs.

"It is an exciting opportunity to support the community. It is an incredibly worthwhile cause. I think especially this time of year when many of us are celebrating, we have to remember that not everyone is experiencing that same level of peace and this gives a chance to pay it forward," said Premier Jewellery and Loans owner Martin Strasser.

To date, a total of $37,900 has been raised for the Women's Shelter through the annual fundraiser.

Bidding starts at $500 and this year's pair are appraised at $7,900.

All money raised will stay in the community and go directly to the Kelowna Women's Shelter.

"We have a few different programs," said shelter communications coordinator Candace Homan.

"We have our peace program and we also have some outreach that we do in the community, so that might not be as well known. Not everybody that comes to us is staying in our shelter, so while some of the funds will go into the physical shelter to provide for the women they also help us reach...we have workers that go out into the community and actually work with the women to help them create a safety plan."

More information on the Kelowna Women's Shelter can be found, here.

Bidding is open until Dec. 20 at 12 p.m.

Those interested in placing a bid can view the earrings in-person at Premier Jewellery and Loans located at 1980 Bredin Road.
