Santa Bus celebrates 20 years in Central Okanagan

20th year for Santa Bus

The Santa Bus is ready to roll for its 20th year.

The transit bus, decked out in holiday decorations, has helped collect over $600,000 in donations since 2002 to support those in need in the community.

Between Dec. 4 and 10, the Santa Bus will collect donations for the Salvation Army and the Central Okanagan Food Bank at several locations around Kelowna, West Kelowna and Lake Country.

“BC Transit is grateful to all the volunteers at First Transit who have dedicated their time over the years to lifting holiday spirits with the Santa Bus,” says Chelsea Mossey, senior government relations manager at BC Transit.

“This initiative has had a significant impact on the communities they serve, and 20 years is a tremendous accomplishment worthy of celebration.”

It will stop at local elementary schools, grocery stores, seniors centres and daycares. You can help by donating non-perishable food items, toiletries, new toys or cash.

“The smiles, laughter and anticipation of kids and enjoyment for myself, the Santa team and the visitors is heartwarming and magical and feels great to be able to help out. Everyone wants to see Santa, and yes even adults love to see him and get a picture. It truly gets you in the Christmas spirit,” says Frank Teichmann, transit operator at First Transit.

The week will wrap up with a special event at the Stuart Park skating rink from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 10. Santa will be on hand.

The Santa Bus is a collaboration between BC Transit, First Transit and the City of Kelowna. You can find a list of events, locations and times here.
