The NITEO Africa Society, a charitable organization that enriches life-wide literacy communities through books, capacity-building resources and reciprocal partnerships across the globe, is shipping 25,000 pounds of books to Uganda.
Starting in Kelowna, a 20-foot container will be loaded up in November by a team of volunteers in the parking lot of Evangel Church before being driven to the Vancouver port to be shipped overseas.
According to NITEO Africa, this will be the 10th sea-can shipped to Uganda to help the less fortunate children with their education.
NITEO Africa also says the Rotary Club of Kelowna has generously donated $10,000 towards the cost of shipping, in addition to the donations from members around the Okanagan community.
NITEO partners with grassroots Ugandan led organizations to build and supply community and school libraries while addressing the low literacy levels amongst children in the country, something they've been doing since 2007.
According to NITEO Africa, 46 per cent of Ugandans are 14-years-old or younger, with over 60 per cent of students unable to read competently.
