Longtime Okanagan resident Silverado Socrates has a different vision for moving the City of Kelowna forward the next four years.

One of five candidates for mayor of the city, Socrates believes with the help of some friends, we can make the city a better place through peace.

"It's amazing what you can do when you work together," she told Castanet during a one-on-one interview.

"You have to have a vision. Back in the 80s when Kelowna had a riot and made the news all over the world...I think we can make world news in a better way."

Socrates, who lost her home and her business, knows first hand what it's like to be homeless.

She says the city needs to look beyond the fact people are homeless now and step back to the root cause.

"We are trying to bail out the boat instead of fixing the hole, and I am one of those examples.

"It seems ridiculous I became home less when I was helping a lot of people that were homeless themselves."

After going through 10 different homes in a year, she says she eventually found stability, a job and a place to live.

As for affordable housing, she says the city doesn't need to build more, but instead needs to utilize what we have now.
