Interior Health's former top doctor facing new child sex crimes in Alberta

More charges for doctor

The former top doctor for Interior Health is facing new child sex crimes in Alberta.

Dr. Albert Stefanus de Villiers, who served as IH’s chief medical health officer until his first arrest in June 2021, was charged Tuesday by RCMP with invitation to sexual touching, making sexually explicit material available to a child and voyeurism.

The crimes are alleged to have occurred between January 2017 and December 2019 in Alberta.

He was originally charged in June 2021 with sex assault and sexual interference for allegations involving a child between 2018 and 2020.

Police say the new allegations surfaced in January 2022 when someone came forward with an additional report of sex offences involving a child. The Grande Prairie Special Investigative Unit handled the second investigation with the help of Olds RCMP.

de Villiers is set to face trial on the original charges Jan. 10 to 12 in Grande Prairie.

The Kelowna resident has been released on bail with multiple conditions, including avoiding contact with anyone under the age of 16, and will appear next in Grande Prairie Provincial Court for the new charges on Sept. 12.

De Villiers was the senior medical officer of health for Alberta's north zone before he moved to Kelowna for Interior Health's top doctor position in August 2020.

Prior to his arrest, de Villiers had been IH's go-to person for communicating COVID-19 pandemic information to the public.
