Sad sight on Hot Sands Beach, dead raptor washed ashore

Dead raptor washed ashore

A sad sight on the Kelowna shoreline.

A dead raptor, which appears to be an osprey, washed up on the shore near the downtown Marina Thursday morning.

A local artist tells Castanet he was walking the shoreline when he made the discovery.

“I was just walking along the waterfront looking for driftwood to make some art when I saw what looks like either a hawk or an Osprey, that's just dead in the water,” Jaims Cox says.

"Not the kind of thing you're expecting to see, maybe a dead fish or two, but not something like that,” he added.

The South Okanagan Research Centre says osprey are not endangered and are quite plentiful in the Okanagan and without examining the body they would have no idea of how or why the bird may have lost its life.

The City of Kelowna has a dedicated online tool to report dead animals. The bird has since been removed.
