Meet the operator of some of the Okanagan's last classic ice cream trucks

The last ice cream trucks

Get it while it’s cold.

Scooter’s Ice Cream Truck – one of the last novelty mobile ice cream services remaining in the Okanagan – is cruising through the valley this summer seven days a week, and new owner Jim Linnell is excited to see its positive impact on the community.

“We’re very well received by the people here in Kelowna, very welcomed. We get phone calls all the time to come show up in neighbourhoods and different functions and parties. It’s just the people. I get nothing but smiles at the truck and it’s just a really positive business," said Linnell.

Whatever the reason may be, ice cream trucks aren’t driving around as much as they once were, but Scooter’s says the nostalgia always comes rushing back whenever an older customer hears the famous ice cream truck jingle.

“I don’t really know what to say about that, but you’re right, it doesn’t seem like it’s as much anymore. I get a lot of comments from our clientele that come to the truck, they all say they haven’t seen a truck in years or ages … they’re just thrilled when we do show up," explained Linnell.

Ice cream trucks may seem like a thing of the past, but as long as Scooter’s is still around, kids in the Okanagan will be able to get that oh so special first ice cream truck experience.

“I get parents that come out and they’re bringing their kids out for the first time and they go, I’ll get an ice cream but this is my kids first time. They’re introducing their kids to the truck as they’re our future customers. You know, it’s a lot of fun seeing that.”

If you’re looking to get your hands on some ice cream this summer, Scooter’s Ice Cream Truck will be ripping around the Okanagan until the end of September.

Two other ice cream trucks operating in the Okanagan are The Rusty Cow in Vernon and the Summerland Ice Queens in Summerland.
