Fatal crash involving motorcycle on Highway 97 near Kelowna airport

Police confirm crash fatality

UPDATE 5:25 p.m.

The Kelowna RCMP have confirmed a fatality in a crash Thursday afternoon on Highway 97 north of the airport.

A motorcycle collided with a pickup at about 3:55 p.m. at the Old Vernon Road intersection.

The northbound lanes of Hwy 97 are now closed at Airport Way, with northbound traffic being redirected onto Airport Way. The RCMP are requesting motorists avoid the area.

Drivers can expect significant delays northbound on Highway 97.

Police are requesting any witnesses to please come forward or if you have any dash camera recordings from around the time of this collision to please contact the Kelowna RCMP at (250) 762-3300.


UPDATE 4:55 p.m.

A single lane of traffic is still getting by in each direction at the site of what is believed to be a fatal crash on Highway 97 north of the airport.

Emergency crews are now erecting privacy barricades at the crash scene at the intersection of Old Vernon Road.

The Kelowna RCMP says they will be issuing a release shortly.


ORIGINAL 4:15 p.m.

Emergency crews are at the scene of a serious crash on Highway 97, just north of the Kelowna airport.

Multiple callers to the Castanet newsroom say they observed a downed blue sport-style motorcycle and what appeared to be a body covered by a tarp.

While traffic is still getting by in one lane, more emergency vehicles are just arriving and a closure is possible.

Northbound traffic is backing up significantly.
