COSAR pauses search for woman believed swept away in Mission Creek

COSAR told to stand down

UPDATE: 10:58 a.m.

After two days of extensive searching for 31-year-old Chelsea Cardno, COSAR has been told by RCMP to stand down due to safety concerns related to the weather and flow levels in Mission Creek.

“It is difficult for everybody involved because everybody involved is dedicated to locating her and they don’t want to take time off, but there is a high safety concern with the rate of the river,” said RCMP spokesperson Const. Mike Della-Paolera.

Kelowna RCMP says they will continue their own search Thursday.

“We will continue an active search until she is located one way or the other. We are following up on any leads. We have gotten some people that are calling in with different things that they see, so we are following up all of that information.”

Della-Paolera says officers are only focused on the water.

‘“We don’t have any information otherwise that would indicate she is somewhere else. Right now we are still on a search mission. We are still trying to locate her. We have no indication that she is not alive. We have to find her.”

Cardno's cousin Tanya Rudolph believes 'JJ' — Cardno's dog she was walking at the time she went missing — may have gotten close to the water.

"Could have been down by the bank getting a drink. A lot of time she has those leashes that tie around her waist. It is really hard to say what happened, because it really was part of her normal routine to walk the dog before she went to work."

"That river up there where she was particularly was pretty fast-moving and it is where the bank eroded so it is a little bit concerning," Rudolph said.

Officers searched the area surrounding Mission Greenway and located Cardno's white BMW parked at the north end of Pasadena Road.

She is described as four-foot-11, 108 pounds with brown hair and blonde highlights. She was last seen wearing a blue or grey cap, bright red puffy jacket, sweatpants and black lace-up style army boots.

Della-Paloera says COSAR’s hope is to get back to searching the water and grounds Saturday with drones.

Anyone who may have been in the Mission Greenway and Mission Creek area Tuesday and may have seen Cardno or her dog is asked to call the Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300.

UPDATE 8:47 a.m.

Central Okanagan Search and Rescue have paused their search for missing Chelsea Cardno, 31, because of safety concerns related to the weather and current flow levels in Mission Creek.

“They will be consulting with the RCMP on Friday with hopes they can re-start the search on Saturday, again the weather and water level will be a factor in the decision to continue the search. The family has been notified of this decision,” says RCMP spokesperson Const. Mike Della-Paolera.

The RCMP are still actively searching for her and will continue to follow up with any information received.

Chelsea is four-foot-11, 108 pounds with brown hair and blonde highlights. She was last seen wearing a blue or grey cap, bright red puffy jacket, sweatpants and black lace-up style army boots. She was last seen leaving home with her dog Tuesday morning to walk along Mission Creek.
