The Kelowna Women’s Shelter (KWS) is one of the beneficiaries of a successful fundraiser by students and parents of Canyon Falls Middle School.
On Saturday, May 28, the Parent Advisory Council (PAC) hosted their inaugural Outdoor Spring Market with more than 80 vendors, including some student entrepreneurs. Also on hand sharing information about their services and programs were the City of Kelowna, Paws it Forward, Childhood Connection and KWS.
Funds raised by the event are intended to support a number of objectives at Canyon Falls Middle School, including more books for the library, instruments for the music department and a school spirit mural in the gym.
The PAC also voted to dedicate 10% of the net profits to the Kelowna Women’s Shelter. The donation works out to $933.93.
KWS has been in operation since 1980, serving women and children in need not just in Kelowna, but also from Oyama to Peachland. It offers safe emergency accommodation and essentials such as food, clothing and toiletries to women and children who have experienced abuse.
The shelter just launched a new awareness campaign this month called Hidden in Plain Sight, to encourage people in the community to reach out if they think someone is enduring domestic violence.
