A fire in a vacant building on Highway 97 in Kelowna this morning has been deemed suspicious.
About 6:30 a.m., the Kelowna Fire Department Dispatch Centre received several 911 calls reporting flame and smoke coming from the building on the 2800 block of the highway.
Firefighters arrived to find moderate smoke coming from the soffit area along two sides of the building, says Platoon Capt. John Kelly.
Crews entered the structure and extinguished a fire in a washroom. Damage was contained to that room.
Evidence and contents found inside indicated it was being used for shelter, says Kelly.
"The fire is suspicious in nature, and the information has been passed on to the RCMP. KFD investigators will be on scene today to determine a cause," he says.
KFD responded with three engines, a rescue unit, command vehicle and 15 personnel.
