No police incidents in Okanagan protest convoy: Kelowna RCMP

Local convoy incident free

Kelowna RCMP tells Castanet there were no police incidents in their area as a result of Saturday’s protest convoy travelling from the North Okanagan down to Osoyoos.

This was the second weekend in a row the group of protesters made the drive.

The organized “Freedom Convoy” departed from the Vernon weigh scales at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, and headed south on Highway 97, passing through Kelowna at about 11:30 a.m., before continuing south through Peachland, past Penticton's Gyro Park, Kaleden, Oliver and into Osoyoos in the late afternoon.

Groups of roadside protesters greeted the convoy as they passed by.

This past weekend's convoy and the rally on Parliament Hill in Ottawa was sparked in opposition to the government's requirement that truckers entering Canada from the United States be vaccinated for COVID-19. But it has since grown to include opposition to all COVID-19 health measures, in addition to general opposition to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

A larger-than-usual crowd also gathered in Kelowna's Stuart Park, where protests against COVID-19 restrictions have been running weekly for more than 18 months.
