KF Aerospace Centre for Excellence secures de Havilland Mosquito

Mosquito to live in Kelowna

KF Aerospace Centre for Excellence is not open yet, but it has already secured a unique airplane to show off when it does.

Curators have acquired a de Havilland 98 Mosquito, a Second World War fighter-bomber that has a wooden frame. It is known as “Mossie” or the “Wooden Wonder,” and it made its debut with the Royal Air Force in 1941.

It was used as an Allied night fighter against the German Luftwaffe and was one of the fastest airplanes in the world at the time thanks to speeds of 640 kilometres per hour.

“The Mossie was an incredibly potent aircraft,” KF project supervisor D’Arcy Barker said in a press release. “It could pack a similar bomb load as a B17 and fight in any theatre at any time of day or night, at high or low altitude.

“It was truly a multi-role aircraft, at home in seemingly any operation. That’s what made it so special. Without it, where would we be? Thankfully, we’ll never know.”

The Mosquito that will be coming to Kelowna has been getting restored for the last five years by Victoria Air Maintenance. KF has found one of the few pilots who are able to fly the plane, so it will be flown to Kelowna.

KF Aerospace Centre for Excellence is currently under construction near Kelowna International Airport and is expected to open later this year.
