The board of education for the Central Okanagan School District has approved catchment boundary changes for for schools on the Westside and in the Okanagan Mission area.
Changes include the anticipated reopening of Ecole Bellevue Creek elementary in September.
The board confirmed Bellevue Creek will open as a K-1 French Immersion and English program school in September and K-2 beginning in the fall of 2023.
Dorothea Walker elementary will be a grades 2-5 English and 2-6 French Immersion school beginning in September and grades 3-6 beginning the following school year and beyond.
The board says catchments have been changed to "reflect neighbourhood populations and available school capacities," however current students will not be displaced from their current school and eligible students will retain bussing eligibility.
At the same time, changes were also made to reflect the repurposing of George Pringle elementary to a secondary school, and the moving of the English program at George Pringle to a reopened Webber Road elementary.
Changes affecting students on the Westside include:
- A portion of Tallus Ridge has been moved from Mar Jok to Shannon Lake elementary.
- The new subdivision in Smith Creek has been moved from Webber Road elementary to Shannon Lake elementary.
- The new subdivision in Goat's Peak has been moved from Webber Road elementary to Peachland elementary.
- Subject to the final approval of the Westside secondary school by Feb. 28, 2022, the elementary French Immersion program at École George Pringle will be split between École Glenrosa elementary and École Hudson Road elementary.
- Upon the opening of the new secondary school, Shannon Lake elementary school's boundaries will be designated to attend École Glenrosa middle school. The immediate area surrounding Constable Neil Bruce middle school, at the same elevation of the school, will be designated as an optional attendance boundary that can have priority at either middle school.
- The new westside secondary school will offer a secondary French Immersion program when it opens. Until the new school opens, secondary French Immersion programming for the Westside will continue to be provided by École Kelowna secondary.
