Big White will host Spartan North American Championship this summer

Spartans run at Big White

Some of the toughest obstacle course racers in the world will try to conquer Big White this summer.

Spartan announced Wednesday the resort will host it's North American Championship on Saturday, Aug. 27.

The Spartan Beast, the sport's signature test, is a 21 kilometre course featuring 30 obstacles. Elite athletes will compete for a share of $62,000 in prize money.

"We are excited to finally bring the championship to Canada," said Spartan founder and CEO Joe De Sena of the race which is being held outside the United States for the first time.

"We're putting together an epic course that will push our athletes to their limits.

"The terrain is no joke. But Spartans are used to a challenge...the question is, who wants it most?"

In order to qualify for elite or age group divisions, competitors must finish in the Top10 in their respective bracket at a North American event prior to the North American championship.

This race will be part of the Kelowna Spartan race weekend which will include a Spartan Ultra (50km/60 obstacles), Spartan Super (10K/25 obstacles) and a kids race(1-3k and obstacles).
