Coast Guard looking for owners of boats sinking on Okanagan Lake

Sinking boat owners wanted

A pair of boats sinking in Okanagan Lake near the old Tolko mill site in Sutherland Bay have still not been reported to the Canadian Coast Guard.

"It appears that neither the houseboat nor the sailing vessel has been reported to Coast Guard yet," says Kiri Westnedge, spokesperson for the Canadian Coast Guard.

Under Canadian law, vessel owners are responsible for their vessel at all times and if their vessel becomes damaged or sinks, owners must take all actions necessary, including repairs, salvage, and prevention or clean-up of leaking fuel and oil.

"So, whoever owns the houseboat and sailing vessel – or a member of the public if the owners aren’t known – should report the vessels by calling the marine pollution reporting line at: toll-free 1-800-889-8852," says Westnedge.

Once the sinking vessel is reported that begins the process of marine pollution risk assessment and work with the owner to have them take action to repair or recover their vessel.

Despite Okanagan Lake being an inland waterway, the Canadian Coast Guard is responsible for sinking vessels and marine pollution from vessels. Other issues may be reported to the RCMP or Transport Canada depending on what the issue is.
