A large dog was attacked while being walked in Mission Creek Regional Park

A warning tonight from conservation officers after a report of a cougar attack in Kelowna Sunday evening.

In a social media post, conservation officers indicate a cougar lunged at a man walking his dog in Mission Creek Regional Park.

The incident apparently occurred about 6:30 p.m. Sunday when a man walking his leashed large-bred dog told conservation he noticed a cougar was following them.

"The cougar then lunged, and attempted to attack the dog, but was scared off," the post stated.

The incident was reported Monday morning.

"Conservation officers have spoken with regional district parks staff regarding this incident, and are closely monitoring the situation.

"Signage has been placed at the park.

"While roaming pets are prey for cougars, aggressive behaviour towards a leashed dog is uncommon and concerning."

Officers ask the public to report any aggressive behaviour on the part of cougars to the RAPP line, 1-877-952-7277.

There were no reports of injuries as a result of Sunday's incident.
