British Columbians are being encouraged to do something this holiday season that could save a life in the future; register as an organ donor.
More than 620 people in this province are waiting for a transplant.
A Kelowna man, who is a two-time liver transplant recipient, is showing his thanks to the healthcare workers who helped him over the years by taking part in Operation Popcorn, as it marks its 30th anniversary. Volunteer transplant recipients, living donors and deceased donor families will be delivering festive packages of popcorn in-person at hospitals around B.C. this week.
“I’ve been so well cared for in my lifetime and I wouldn’t be here, living life to the fullest if it weren’t for all the amazing health professionals who are involved with donors and their families. They give life back to so many fortunate transplant recipients,” says Matt Scaife.
“Operation Popcorn is one way I can show my appreciation to the people who saved my life, twice.”
Matt had his first transplant at 27 as a result of an auto-immune disease called Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis, which aggressively scarred his liver and ducting.
“My most recent transplant happened in 2020, and I'm relieved to say I have had an amazingly fast recovery and have had wonderful positive changes to how I feel. I had forgotten how quickly things improve after transplant. Both of my transplant recoveries were nothing short of amazing."
Deliveries will be made at Vernon Jubilee Hospital today, Monday, Dec. 6, and to Kelowna General Hospital on Wednesday, Dec. 8.
“Operation Popcorn is a longstanding and heartfelt tradition shared by transplant recipients, and it serves as an excellent reminder of the need for organ donations,” said Health Minister Adrian Dix. “This year, please consider joining the heroes who have given selflessly of the greatest gift of all—the gift of life, and sign up to be an organ donor.”
