COVID-19 vaccinations for children aged 5-11 start Wednesday in Interior Health

Kids COVID vax start Dec.1

The province launched COVID-19 immunization for children aged five to 11 Monday, but the first appointments in Interior Health don’t take place until Wednesday.

“We’re launching the next phase of our immunization campaign by now offering the pediatric COVID-19 vaccine to children,” said Dr. Sue Pollock, Interior Health interim chief medical health officer. “This vaccine is safe and effective at preventing COVID-19 in children, which means less disruption to school and the activities children and their families enjoy.”

Children must be registered in order to get an appointment. There are no drop-in clinics being offered by Interior Health.

Parents and guardians must register their children at www.getvaccinated.gov.bc.ca or call 1-833-838-2323.

When a nearby clinic is available, parents and guardians will receive a text or email when it is time to book an appointment.

Clinic locations in the Central Okanagan include Capri Centre Mall, the Community Health and Services Centre and Westbank Lions Community Centre.

In the North Okanagan, the clinics are at Pleasant Valley Health Centre in Armstrong, Enderby Health Centre, Lumby Health Centre, Salmon Arm Health Centre, Sicamous Health Centre and Queen Victoria Hospital in Revelstoke.

South Okanagan locations are the Trade and Convention Centre in Penticton, the Osoyoos Health Centre, Nk’Mip Resource Centre in Oliver and South Similkameen Health Centre in Keremeos.

Kamloops Public Health is hosting the clinic in that city. Other sites in the Thompson-Cariboo can be found on the Interior Health website.

“Immunizing children brings additional protection to everyone in your family,” said pediatrician Dr. Shannon Wires. “The pediatric COVID-19 vaccine has gone through a rigorous review and approval process. It provides excellent protection and I recommend parents get their children vaccinated as soon as possible.”

Children are eligible for registration on or after their fifth birthday.
