1 arrested after 'critical' police standoff in Kelowna

'Critical' incident resolved

Police in Kelowna say a “critical incident” was resolved peacefully on Wednesday night at a home at Gordon Avenue and KLO Road.

The Southeast District RCMP’s “critical incident program” was involved in the police standoff that ended in the arrest of one person at around 9:40 p.m.

The critical incident program includes crisis negotiators and tactical officers pulled from across the region. The specialized officers have training typical frontline officers may not and respond to high-risk situations ranging from barricaded persons to hostage situations.

RCMP say Wednesday night's incident on Gordon Drive was “isolated” and resulted in the evacuation of nearby homes. The investigation into the incident is on-going. No other details were released.

“I am proud of the response of the Kelowna RCMP Members and our SED-CIP to quickly respond to this high risk situation and bring it to a peaceful resolution. The highly trained members of the CIP-SED worked in tandem with our frontline officers in accordance with their training and experience, which is something our officers do everyday to protect the citizens of Kelowna,” said Insp. Adam MacIntosh of the Kelowna RCMP.

Police are asking the public to refrain from posting pictures of officers’ locations near a critical incident, or the techniques they are using, for the safety of the officers.
