Home massively damaged by fire in Kelowna

House fire flares back up

UPDATE 4:20 p.m.

The Kelowna Fire Department is back at the site of a house fire this morning on Fuller Avenue.

The blaze has flared back up, putting up a cloud of white smoke over the neighbourhood. Fire crews are now dousing the home with water and have the situation under control.

It is believed the fire continued to smoulder in the fire-break between the duplex units and moved into the attic.

The home will now be monitored for next 24 hours to ensure any hot spots do not flare up again.


UPDATE 12:04 p.m.

No one was injured as a result of an early morning house fire in the 900-block of Fuller Avenue in Kelowna on Tuesday.

All four occupants of the duplex, including those in the neighbouring home that received some damage to its siding, got out safely.

One resident of the fully-involved duplex told Castanet his roommate was still sleeping when the fire broke out just before 8 a.m., but a neighbour came to alert him of the fire. According to Platoon Captain Tim Light, working fire alarms also played a factor in everyones safety.

"They were working properly, one tenant said they heard the smoke detector, so yeah, smoke alarms do save lives," said Light.

Kelowna Fire Department responded with four engines, a rescue vehicle, command truck and a safety vehicle along with 20 personnel.

The fire was targeted by crews from the outside and then extinguished with an interior attack. Firefighters remain on scene as the rear of the structure was deemed unsafe to overhaul.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it is not believed to be suspicious. The four residents of the duplex are now in the care of ESS.


UPDATE 9:37 a.m.

City of Kelowna Fire Department Platoon Captain Tim Light tells Castanet that they do not believe this fire is suspicious at this time, however, a fire investigator has been called in to complete a full investigation.

One of the occupants of the home tells Castanet they believe the fire may have been sparked by a faulty heater which was turned on because it was a cool night.

The fire did serious damage to the rear portion of the home as well as the garage and there was also damage to a neighbouring house as well.


UPDATE 9:20 a.m.

The house fire on Fuller Ave. has now been doused and fire crews are working to mop up the scene.

Emergency Support Services is also on scene to assist those who have been displaced due to the blaze.

Kelowna Fire has called for an investigator to try to determine the cause of the fire.

A group of young men who live at the impacted house were uninjured.


UPDATE 8:37 a.m.

Fire crews are working to douse a blaze at a residence in the 900-block of Fuller Ave. near Graham St.

The residential home is fully involved and the fire appears to have started just before 8 a.m.

Fire crews have called for an investigator to assess the scene once the fire is under control.

Neighbours tell Castanet they believe the home is occupied however no one from the home was spotted at the scene.


ORIGINAL 8:18 a.m.

The Kelowna Fire Department is dealing with a structure fire in the area of Fuller Avenue and Graham Road.

The fire is believed to originate from a home in the area and has put up a large plume of black smoke over the city.
