Cougar spotted in Kelowna neighbourhood just days before Halloween

Cougar sighting in Rutland

A cougar has been spotted in a residential neighbourhood between Hein Rd. and Lester Rd. in Kelowna.

Denise McSweyn tells Castanet her husband was putting some trash out Thursday night when he heard a growl. Later Friday morning, around 3 a.m., the couple spotted the big cat in their backyard on Houghton Rd., when it triggered a motion light.

"He was a good size." McSweyn said, adding she called RCMP and BCCOS and she is concerned that the big cat might stick around the neighbourhood until Sunday night.

"I'm concerned with Halloween and all the little kids around," McSweyn says.

At first, they thought the animal was a big dog, but McSweyn stepped outside to get a good look and, "this thing looked back at us, and I said 'that's no dog,' it had a cat face and it was tan with a long tail."

McSweyn says she and her husband have been contacted by BCCOS and they are aware of the sighting.
