Movie characters, make-up and masks top the list for hot items this Halloween in Kelowna

Hot Halloween costumes

Kelowna's downtown core has gotten a little scarier since Halloween Alley took over the former BC Tree Fruits building at the corner of Water Street and Queensway just two weeks ago.

This is the first year the costume shop has set up downtown.

Halloween Alley usually opens inside Orchard Park Mall.

Manager Deb Lawless says she has seen a lot of new faces with the location change.

"We have had such a welcoming experience meeting lots of new people that have probably never been in Halloween Alley before," she said. "We are getting lots of new walk-in traffic from people living in the core downtown so that has been awesome."

Lawless says popular costumes this year are inspired by the latest movies as well as a few classics.

"Horror plays a really big influence at Halloween time. The movies play part and parcel with that. It is pretty exciting in a couple of days we have our Michael Myers Halloween movie coming out so that has been huge. We carry the mask, we have the whole outfit."

Harry Potter items have also been flying off the shelves.

"Over and over again since the first year we got it in, we started off as a small selection and it just continues to grow."

Make-up and gels also top the list of Halloween must-haves.

Despite the pandemic, Halloween Alley had one of its best financial years in 2020, and Lawless says she expects no different this year.

"Halloween is a time to celebrate and gather with the friends that you can. Our tagline is to celebrate life with Halloween style. It just puts a smile on and it does it for all ages."

Halloween Alley is open 10 a.m to 9 p.m. Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays.
