223 new cases identified in Central Okanagan last week

Local cases hit 10-week low

The number of new COVID-19 cases in the Central Okanagan decreased last week compared to the week prior, to the lowest weekly case count since mid-July.

New geographical data released this week by the BC Centre for Disease Control shows there were 223 new cases of the virus identified in the Central Okanagan local health area between Sept. 26 and Oct. 2, a 20 per cent reduction from the week prior.

Weekly case counts in the region have come down dramatically since hitting a high of 922 new cases in mid-August.

Vaccination rates have surpassed the provincial average in some communities within the Central Okanagan in recent weeks.

New cases in the Vernon region rose slightly to 64, while Armstrong/Spallumcheen and Enderby regions saw significant reductions, to six and 11 new cases respectively.

Numbers in Kamloops remained stable, but high, compared with last week, at 226 new cases.

To the south, case counts dropped slightly, with 48 new cases in the Penticton region, down from an all-time high of 69 posted the week before.

The South Okanagan region, which includes Oliver and Osoyoos, saw 20 new cases last week.

A few Interior local health regions posted their highest-ever weekly case counts last week, including Merritt, with 43 new cases, Cranbrook, at 90 new cases, and 100 Mile House, with 42 new cases.

For the third week in a row, the Prince George and Surrey local health areas recorded the highest number of cases in the province last week, at 328 and 325 cases respectively. But the Prince George LHA has less than a quarter of the population of Surrey.
