After a year off, Denim on the Diamond returned to Kelowna in a big way

Denim returns in a big way

Live music was back in Kelowna in a big way Saturday night, with Denim on the Diamond making its triumphant return.

The popular one-day music festival in downtown Kelowna's Kings Stadium was forced to cancel the festivities in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. And while changing health regulations throughout the summer put the event in jeopardy this year, organizers Mitch Carefoot and Kurt Jory were able to pull things off with just a few weeks notice.

One of the last-minute changes to this year's event was a requirement that all attendees be double vaccinated, but that didn't stop thousands of people from filling up Kings Stadium Saturday night.

Music kicked off at 12:30 p.m. with Kelowna's own Teigen Gayse, followed by Edmonton-based Shawnee Kish and The Royal Foundry.

The Kootenay's electo-bluegrass duo Moontricks brought some heavier boot-stomping bass music to the stage, before Yukon Blonde played their first live show in two years. The rock band – originally from Kelowna, but now based out of Vancouver – appeared emotional following their set, hugging each other and thanking the crowd for their energy.

Vancouver's Dear Rouge took to the stage as night fell for an energetic rock set, with frontwoman Danielle McTaggart putting everything she had and more into the performance.

The night was capped off with a set from country band The Hunter Brothers. The group of five brothers hail from Shaunavon, Saskatchewan, and one of the brothers, J.J., Is a former Kelowna Rocket.

Throughout the day, attendees played lawn games, lounged in lawn chairs and enjoyed beverages and food from local food trucks.

Kelowna Mayor Colin Basran took the stage before the Hunter Brothers set to thank Carefoot and Jory for pulling off the event.

"Do we want Denim on the Diamond 2022? Do we want AltiTunes Big White 2022?" Basran said to the crowd, to large cheers. "Then keep supporting these guys because they are making it happen ... I am so proud of them."
