UPDATE 11:50 a.m.

The Kelowna RCMP are in the process of applying for a warrant to search the unit that was the site of a domestic assault this morning.

Officers will be searching for a firearm after a man was arrested by tactical officers following a domestic assault at the U TWO Apartment building on Academy Way.

Insp. Adam MacIntosh says the 28-year-old man surrendered after a verbal discussion with police via loud horn between two balconies. Officers responded to the unit in force after being called by a neighbour about a domestic dispute possibly involving a firearm.

At this point, no firearm has been located, but police have yet to search the home.

MacIntosh said the female victim’s injuries were not serious, but the suspect faces the possibility of common assault charges. Firearm-related charges could follow if a gun is found. He said the suspect and victim were in “some level of a relationship” together.

“They were both inside an apartment, which was the subject of what we were responding to, and both did come out as a part of the negotiation with the negotiation team,” he said.

No criminal charges have been laid at this point.

UPDATE 10:51 a.m.

Kelowna RCMP have called a press conference for later Thursday after tactical officers helped arrest a man allegedly behaving erratically with a gun.

Police received a report that a woman had been assaulted by a man at a residence in the 800-block of Academy Way in Kelowna. It was reported that the man had a gun and was acting erratically. Both the victim and the suspect were still in the residence.

RCMP tell Castanet front line officers established an area of containment around the scene, and out of an abundance of caution, the Southeast District Emergency Response Team was called in to assist.

“Officers evacuated the surrounding residences and established contact with the suspect,” says Cpl. Jocelyn Noseworthy. “The suspect, a 28-year-old Kelowna man, was taken into custody without incident.”

The suspect remains in custody at this time. The investigation is ongoing.

“We wish to thank the public for their cooperation during this operation,” says Insp. Adam MacIntosh. “We were able to bring this incident to a safe resolution for everyone and the roadway and area are open once again.”

UPDATE 10:15 a.m.

A police officer at the scene tells Castanet this incident has concluded and the RCMP’s tactical team is demobilizing.

The nearby Aberdeen Hall Preparatory School was closed today because of the incident. About half of the school’s students had arrived at school prior to police closing roads in the area.

Parents are now being instructed pick up their children from a number of locations.

RCMP have not yet confirmed details on the incident, which residents say was due to a domestic dispute.

UPDATE 9:55 a.m.

A heavy police presence at the U TWO Apartment building on Academy Way is due to a domestic dispute, say residents.

A resident of the building tells Castanet he heard a woman being assaulted on the floor above him, leading his roommate to call police.

“He was threatening her with guns, so my roommate called that in,” the resident said.

RCMP responded with tactical officers and have deployed a robot to move through the building. The incident has been unfolding for “two or three hours.”

Officers have fully secured the building and are not allowing residents to enter.

Academy Way has now reopened.

Police have not confirmed any details related to the call.

ORIGINAL 8:35 a.m.

Castanet has received multiple reports of a heavy police presence along Academy Way near the University of British Columbia.

"There appears to be a pretty serious police incident going on on academy Hill right now. Police have got John Hindle Road blocked off at Alumni Avenue and are allowing no traffic up the hill, everyone is being rerouted through the UBC campus," one eyewitness tells Castanet.

Kelowna RCMP is asking people to avoid the area of Academy Way due to ongoing police incident.

Academy Way between Hindle Drive and Acadia Street is currently closed. The length of this closure is not known at this time.

“We are also asking the public not to post or talk about the movement of police officers in the area,” says Cpl. Jocelyn Noseworthy. “This can create a risk to both our officers and the public.”

Further details will be released as soon as possible.
