Kelowna RCMP Const. Lacey Browning had her first court appearance Tuesday afternoon in connection to a wellness check on a UBCO student nurse back in January 2020.

Browning has been charged with assault following the incident that gained national attention.

Const. Browning was called to an apartment in Kelowna near UBCO to check on the wellbeing of Mona Wang, after being alerted by a concerned friend.

Wang had not been accused of a crime, but Browning handcuffed and dragged her face-first through her building. In the lobby of the building, Browning pushed Wang's head into the ground with her boot. The footage of the incident became public in June 2020 through a civil lawsuit launched by Wang months prior. That lawsuit has since been settled.

Browning's court appearance Tuesday was procedural in nature. Castanet was not allowed into the courtroom due to COVID-19 restrictions.

In a statement to Castanet back when Browning was first charged Wang said she was "very grateful" that Browning has been charged, "and that the Crown did not turn a blind eye to her offences."

Brownings next court appearance is scheduled for October 12 to consult legal counsel.
