Charity holding raffle to support seniors housing in Kelowna

Seniors Outreach is hosting a 50/50 raffle to raise funds for its new housing program.

The non-profit, which works enhance the lives of seniors in Kelowna, is kicking off a new pilot companion housing program this summer, which will offer more flexibility for seniors struggling to find an affordable place to live. Seniors Outreach believes that companion housing is a crucial part of the solution for problems related to the high cost of housing and social secludedness, for both homeowners and potential renters.

Seniors Outreach and Resource Centre offers several housing initiatives through their regional housing program, including the services of a housing social worker that helps seniors find housing, and acts as an advocate as well as an emotional resource for them. The social worker navigates the system and helps guide seniors through housing options such as affordable or low-income housing, assistive living, supportive housing, and long-term care.

Group executive director Vi Sorensen says this program is a necessity in the community.

“People need to be housed, and the worries of moving and finding a home are overwhelming. Affordability has gone through the roof, and seniors in their seventies, eighties and even nineties are being evicted as landlords sell their houses in this hot housing market. These vulnerable people are struggling as they find themselves on the verge of experiencing homelessness.”

Sorensen also says situations such as being evicted or having to find a home so quickly can create stress and anxiety for seniors.
