Balcony fire doused

Kelowna firefighters responded to a balcony fire early Monday.

About 4 a.m. the Kelowna dispatch centre received an alarm and 911 call reporting a balcony on fire on the 900 block of Academy Way.

First arriving crews reported an activated sprinkler on a first floor balcony.

The sprinkler system was able to contain the fire to the balcony, with no extension into the structure, says Platoon Capt. John Kelly.

Damage was contained to the furnishings and contents of the balcony.

Three engines, a ladder truck, rescue unit and command vehicle responded to the incident, with 16 personnel.

The fire was deemed accidental in nature.

Residents are reminded to fully extinguish smoking materials in an appropriate container.
