A man has been apprehended under the Mental Health Act after wielding a sledgehammer during a road rage incident downtown Kelowna last week.
Police were called to the 400-block of Leon Avenue on Feb. 25 just after 4 p.m. for a disagreement between two motorists.
RCMP say one driver is alleged to have exited his vehicle and struck the second vehicle with a sledgehammer several times before leaving in a grey Dodge Dakota pickup. Police patrols could not locate the vehicle.
The next day at around 4 p.m., an officer tried to pull over the same pickup in the 1500-block of Burtch Street, but the male driver took off at a high rate of speed. The officer did not pursue him.
Just after 7 p.m., police were tipped off about the truck in the 1400-block of St. Paul Street. Officers swarmed the area and eventually located it in the area of Richter Street and Sutherland Avenue where it struck a police vehicle.
“The 40-year-old man was apprehended under the Mental Health Act and transported to hospital,” said Cpl. Jocelyn Noseworthy. “This investigation is ongoing. No charges have been laid at this time.”
