The former Bargain Shop on Bernard, closed for 11 years, has come down

Bargain Shop comes down

Vacant for nearly 11 years, the former Bargain Shop building on Bernard Avenue is no more.

Crews have been working at demolishing the building the past two days.

Only steel girders remain.

The building once housed a Woolworths store, before it was rebranded under The Bargain Shop name.

Poor sales prompted owners to close the building in 2010.

It remained vacant, and the subject of numerous rumours and speculation until finally going on the market in 2017. A month later the building, listed at $9.4 million, was purchased by Mission Group.

The site, including the rear parking lot, will eventually be home to three towers, including Brooklyn, a 25-storey residential tower fronting St. Paul, which is expected to open later this year.

On the former Bargain Shop property, two towers will eventually be constructed, a 17-storey office tower bordering St. Paul, and a 34-storey residential tower closer to Bertram Street.
