Lake Country debuts 3 new sculptures by Indigenous artists along Pelmewash Parkway

New sculptures on parkway

Those travelling along Pelmewash Parkway in Lake County recently have likely noticed three significant Indigenous art sculptures.

The pieces are the work of two Indigenous Okanagan artists.

Clint George from the Penticton Indian Band and Les Louis of the Lower Similkameen Indian Band combined their skills working in wood and metal to design and create three sculptures that share some of the traditional stories of the Okanagan people.

The municipality has produced a video with George and Louis, allowing the artists to explain their work.

“It was a great opportunity to work with another awesome artist,” said Louis. “I really enjoyed working on this project with him and am really thankful.”

Lake Country council also opened its meeting Tuesday evening for the first time with an Indigenous territorial acknowledgement.

“Recognition and respect are essential elements to establishing healthy, reciprocal relationships,” the district said in a statement.

The funding for the project was provided by the Lake Country Public Art Advisory Commission and Lake Country ArtWalk.
