A new song honours the life of late Kelowna musician Steve Soucy

Musician honoured in song

The life of keyboardist Steve Soucy is being remembered in the medium he devoted much of his life to - music.

A song, utilizing unused tracks Soucy laid down during a recording session last fall, has been written and performed by a number of Okanagan artists he spent years beside.

"I have a bunch of tracks and musical takes that weren't used," recalled Rann Berry, who wrote the song.

"One of them especially was an accordion lick that he did that was really great that he spent a lot of time on. We didn't use it, but I always thought it was such a beautiful part."

Soucy died suddenly from a heart attack in late November at age 60.

Berry says he thought about that part when a bunch of musicians got together to remember Soucy.

"I could write a new song, make it about Steve and use the parts he recorded. Here we are, a month later, getting together to record it."

The song was recorded remotely with Berry providing vocals backed up by the Cadillac Kings.

Berry says it even more special when Steve's brother, Shawn Soucy agreed to play drums on the song.

The song is available on YouTube.
