The Kelowna Regional Transit system has received $7.3M to aid in restart and recovery

$7.3M for transit recovery

Money from senior levels of government to assist in the recovery of the transit network across the province will begin funneling down to local operators.

Kelowna Transit announced Tuesday it will receive $7.3 million over the next two years as part of the safe restart program.

The funds are part of the more than $2.1 billion the province was promised from Ottawa in July to help sectors of the economy rebound from the economic impact of COVID-19.

The money will help Kelowna Transit cover losses in revenue, as well as additional expenses incurred to improve safety and comfort resulting from the pandemic.

While thanking both levels of government, Mayor Colin Basran says the money will also allow the city to work with transit to provide a safe, affordable and reliable transit service.

A news release also states the funding will also ensure transit fares remain stable and affordable as the region recovers from the impact of COVID-19.
