New COVID-19 testing centre opening at Doyle Ave. facility

IH expands COVID testing

Interior Health is opening new, temporary COVID-19 testing site within its Doyle Avenue Community Health and Services Centre.

Tests for the virus will be available to anyone who may have been exposed to positive cases within the community.

The site will be open in the evenings, seven days a week from 4:30 p.m. until 10:30 p.m.

The announcement comes after dozens tested positive for COVID-19 as a result of an exposure linked to Kelowna dating back to the end of June.

At last report, 137 positive tests have been linked to the Kelowna exposure.

According to provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry, nearly 1,000 people across the province have also self isolated as a result of possible exposure.

“We are taking a different approach and trying something new at the CHSC,” said IH chief medical health officer Dr. Sue Pollock.

“Many of the people who have tested positive for COVID-19 in Kelowna this month have been in their 20s and 30s, and live, work and socialize downtown. This site is set up to be convenient and accessible for these individuals and others, so that getting tested when you may have been exposed to COVID-19 is easy, and we can stop the spread.”

In a news release, Interior Health says the centre will be operational for two weeks, and possibly longer if the the need is there.

People accessing the Doyle Avenue site do not require an appointment, and will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis.

The testing and assessment centre at the urgent and primary care centre at the Capri Mall remains open for testing, by appointment, from 9 a.m. until 8:30 p.m., seven days a week.

Symptoms of COVID-19 include:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Other milder symptoms may include: runny nose, fatigue, body aches (muscles and joints aching), diarrhea, headache, sore throat, vomiting and red eyes.
