Suspect hospitalized by police dog, investigators called in

IIO to probe police dog bite

B.C.’s police oversight agency has been called to Kelowna after a police dog took a serious bite out of an alleged bike thief on Saturday night.

The Independent Investigations Office says Kelowna RCMP officers were investigating a stolen battery-assisted mountain bike at 10:18 p.m. on the Rail Trail at Hardy Street.

“While on the trail, the suspect had an interaction with a police service dog and his handler, and sustained a serious dog-bite injury,” the IIO said.

The man was taken to Kelowna General Hospital, where he underwent surgery.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact the IIO witness line at 1-855-446-8477.

The IIO investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
