Kelowna residents asked to donate blood in honour of Canada Day

Canada Day blood drive

The Canadian Blood Services is putting a call out to new and returning blood donors to help patients by booking an appointment before or immediately following the Canada Day holiday.

"The need for blood is rising fast as hospitals resume procedures that were put on hold due to COVID-19," says Marcelo Dominguez, regional PA specialist in a release.

To meet demand, the Kelowna location has expanded their hours and added hundreds of appointments each week. In July, they have 500 open appointments to fill at the 103-1865 Dilworth Drive donation centre.

Canadian Blood Services says they often see a decrease in donations during the summers months as people tend to go on vacations, plan family activities and changes in routines make it harder for people to find time to donate.

"The summer season often translates into a higher number of accidents on the road with a greater potential of injuries requiring blood transfusions."

It can take up to 50 donors to help save a person who's been in a motor vehicle accident.

All blood types help patients, but there's currently a greater need for O-negative blood because it is the only type compatible with all other blood types.

Download the GiveBlood app, call 1-888-2-DONATE or book through their website.
