Local chef delivered a pizza lunch to staff at KGH

Gift of pizza for KGH staff

A local chef wanted to show those on the front lines of the fight against COVID-19 that the community is behind them. And what better way to show some love than with pizza.

When the province ordered on Tuesday that all bars must close to help slow the spread of the virus, Jack's Pizza and Liquor, was left with a whole bunch of pizza dough, and no mouths to feed.

“It just popped into my head, I hadn't heard of anyone bringing the people on the front lines any food, and this dough's going to go to waste, so let's just make pizzas and bring them to the nurses and doctors,” said James Holmes, head chef of downtown Kelowna's Salt & Brick, Jack's sister bar.

Holmes said when he used to work at Craft Corner Kitchen in Penticton, he would would drop off their leftover donuts to all the nurses at the end of his shift, so this week's pizza idea was a no-brainer.

On Wednesday, he called a nurse friend at Kelowna General Hospital, who said they'd love to have him. He arrived with 20 freshly made pizzas, with messages of love and encouragement from the bar's staff members written on the boxes.

“When we showed up they greeted me very happily with open arms and walked me to the break room,” Holmes said. “As I was going through the halls, there were a few doctors and nurses who were like, 'Oh the pizzas here,' so word got around pretty quick that this was happening. So it was a great feeling, it was amazing.”

On Friday, Jack's partially reopened for delivery through Skip the Dishes and “curbside pickup,” and Holmes says they'll be looking into something similar for Salt & Brick next week.

“Financially it sucks for everybody, everybody's just trying to do what they can and support local which is amazing, and the Okanagan has definitely come together for that,” he said.

“There's not much we can do. I've kind of decompressed a little and hung out with the pooch and got a bit more fresh air than I normally do actually.”
