Downtown Kelowna TD Bank locked down as police swarm

Bank robbed downtown

UPDATE: 2:10 p.m.

Police have confirmed the TD Canada Bank on the corner of Kelowna's Leon Avenue and Ellis Street was robbed Wednesday afternoon, and the suspect, or suspects, are still at large.

The incident occurred shortly after 1 p.m., and it's unclear how much, if any, cash was stolen. The TD Bank is currently closed as police investigate.

Police quickly swarmed the downtown core, appearing to focus on the building at 549 Lawrence Avenue. Several officers searched the roof of the building, while others looked around the building. An employee at the nearby Picture Perfect said officers had asked him if he had seen anyone suspicious looking.

An RCMP helicopter circled the downtown core for close to an hour at low altitude.

UPDATE: 1:50 p.m.

The downtown Kelowna branch of TD Bank on the corner of Leon Avenue and Ellis Street has been locked down.

Police are inside the building, and a sign on the front door advises customers the branch has been temporarily closed due to an emergency situation.

While it's not yet known if the police action in the downtown core was the result of a bank robbery, officers did appear to be searching for someone.

The RCMP helicopter was circling the downtown core, and staff at nearby Picture Perfect on Lawrence Avenue say they were asked by officers if they had seen anyone suspicious.

ORIGINAL: 1:30 p.m.

Kelowna RCMP were out in force in the downtown area Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.

Officers appear to be centred around a building at 549 Lawrence Avenue.

Our reporter on the scene indicates officers are on the roof with what appears to be a hand-held measuring device of some sort, and the RCMP helicopter is circling the downtown area.

This is a developing story and we will have more information as soon as it becomes available.
