Kelowna Cabs customers happy with new Tesla taxi

Tesla a hit with taxi takers

Customers are enjoying the peace and quiet of Kelowna Cabs' new Tesla taxi.

It's the company's first electric Tesla in a fleet of more than 70 cars. Since being added in November, Kelowna Cabs' Roy Paulson says it has been the envy of all the drivers.

"As far as driving one of them, it's pretty much autopilot type of thing... It actually does have an autopilot button.

"When you take your foot off the brake, the sensors in the car automatically realize that you do need to stop, and it also shows the sensor right on the screen ... that tells us there's a car in front. So, technically, you don't have to use the brake pedal. For safety, of course we do, but you don't have to.

"One of our previous passengers said she enjoyed how quiet it was because their personal vehicle is a diesel, and in order to listen to any music they have to have the stereo turned up full. With this, you can have the stereo on minimum and still hear everything."

When Paulson picked up Anita with her groceries Tuesday afternoon, she was blown away by the Tesla experience.

"It's a very nice ride, a very comfortable taxi. I could stay here the whole day. We can start driving to Vancouver!"

Kelowna Cabs hopes to add more Teslas to its fleet in the near future.
