City council received an action plan to tackle its top priorities

Taking action on priorities

The City of Kelowna has prepared a list of close to 100 projects and initiatives that will align with city council's stated priorities for its four-year term.

Those projects, outlined in Action Plan 2020, were presented to council Monday afternoon.

It's the first time the city has taken such a step to not only go public with its stated goals, but to track them and report back on that progress.

"It is probably the most comprehensive game plan that I've seen specifically for the year upcoming ever," said Coun. Ryan Donn.

City manager Doug Gilchrist says the plan is "indicative of where we're heading as a city under this council's leadership."

"I believe the 2020 Action Plan is a strong representation of council's defined culture. Continually improving, transparent communication and balancing our priorities," said Gilchrist.

Project manager Angie Thiessen called the plan ambitious, saying it will deliver value across the entire community.

"While priority of community safety and social issues, transportation and vibrant neighbourhoods see some emphasis, it also ensures a balance of effort to each of the council priorities, including economic resiliency and environmental protection," she said.

Thiessen added the plan is not intended as a list of the essential day-to-day operation work done by the city.

Mayor Colin Basran said while council set out its priorities at the beginning of its term, events at home and abroad could make them adjust those priorities.

He spoke specifically about climate change, and today's worldwide focus on the devastating fires in Australia.

"It continues to hammer home the climate issue," said Basran.

"I know we have talked about it, but we need to have a conversation as a council as to looking at perhaps maybe strengthening our climate priority in terms of actions we may want to take in the future."
