Hypothermic Half-Marathon takes place Feb. 22 in Kelowna

Half-marathon for the brave

If you’ve always wanted to do a half-marathon in the middle of winter, now’s your chance.

The Hypothermic Half-Marathon takes place Feb. 22 at the Mission Creek Greenway, hosted by the Running Room – and it’s going ahead rain, hail, snow or shine.

For walkers and runners less inclined to do the full 21 kilometres, there are five and 10-kilometre options.

It's been very snowy weather the last two years, says spokesperson Neil Wakelin, but that's the thrill of it.

"There’s more people that would want to do it just for the experience and it’s something different to do. They’re either getting prepared to run a half marathon later in the year and want the practice, or they’re doing it just for the fun of it. That’s the draw of this event – people aren’t doing it to get a fast time. They’re expecting it to be cold.”

Running Room Kelowna manager Wendy Jordan-Olive says the event can be very picturesque in the wintertime.

"The last two years, the trail has been untouched snow, and often if you're not running in snow it’s actually snowing, so it’s quite picturesque."

Jordan-Olive says one of the biggest drawcards is the opportunity for participants to play their part in assisting the local YMCA. Over the past 10 years, the Kelowna store has given more than $14,000 from its events to help change lives through the organization.

All registered participants receive a Hypothermic Run toque and travel mug, brunch at the Creekside Pub & Grill, and a unique finisher's medal.

The race starts at 9 a.m. on Feb. 22. To sign up, visit the website
