Pole down on Hwy 97 caused traffic chaos on Glenmore

Traffic chaos lasted hours

UPDATE: 6:15 a.m.

DriveBC reports the closure on Highway 97 in Winfield was finally cleared about 1 a.m.

The closure due to an accident and pole down caused traffic chaos for hours.

UPDATE 9:13 p.m.

DriveBC has updated that single lane traffic has opened on Highway 97, in both directions.

Due to a collision between Commonwealth Road and Beaver Lake Road for 1.4 kilometres.

Expect Major delays due to congestion.

Watch for traffic control.

UPDATE 7:55 p.m

Another Castanet viewer says "Glenmore is backed up northbound as far south as cross road and moving at less than five km/h, and the back up is about 30 kilometres."

He says it took him an hour to get from Orchard Park Mall to the Glenmore landfill.

"Travel northbound should be put off if possible."

UPDATE 7:45 p.m.

There was major traffic chaos for commuters travelling north from Kelowna Tuesday evening.

It was bumper-to-bumper traffic from the Petro Canada on Glenmore Road, all the way to Winfield.

Readers report there were thousands of vehicles in both directions.

The usual 50-minute commute to Vernon took more than two hours as traffic was diverted because of a crash that brought down a power line.

UPDATE 5:58 p.m.

Kelowna RCMP have issued a statement regarding the closure on Highway 97 just south of Beaver Lake Road due to a down power line.

"BC Hydro is on scene. It is anticipated Hwy 97 will be closed for another three hours before a partial opening (ie. alternating traffic). It is expected to be another four hours from then until the highway is completely open."

Both directions of the highway are shut down after a motor vehicle accident involving downed power lines.

UPDATE 5:48 p.m.

A Castanet viewer is reporting that "traffic is now closed northbound completely as well. They have turned all traffic around to reroute to Glenmore (Road)."

A power pole has fallen on Highway 97, causing both directions to be shut down completely.

UPDATE 4:56 p.m.

Southbound traffic on Highway 97 is being detoured via John Hindle Drive and Glenmore Road as a power pole is down near Voyager RV.

Northbound traffic on Glenmore is moving at a steady pace, but southbound is heavily congested.

Cars are bumper to bumper and backed up from the south side of Winfield, north to Turtle Bay Pub.

Firefighters are on scene on the highway, directing traffic. Proceed with caution.

Castanet has also received a report that northbound Highway 97 traffic has been blocked at Kelowna International Airport.

ORIGINAL 4:30 p.m.

Reports are coming in that a power pole has been knocked down across Highway 97 just South of Beaver Lake Road, on the border of Kelowna and Lake Country.

A witness says a car hit the pole, and the incident is causing significant traffic back-ups.

Traffic has come to a full stop in both directions in Lake Country.

Emergency vehicles are on scene.

Castanet will have more information as it becomes available.
