Isagenix athlete Jessica Jewels returns from her Kenya trip

Local athlete's aid to Kenya

Following the deadly landslides that have killed numerous people in Kenya over the past several weeks, Lake Country athlete Jessica Jewels has returned from her trip with some better news.

The local athlete was the only Canadian on the SERV International missions trip to care for underprivileged children at the House of Hope orphanage.

Visiting the orphanage and nearby villages in the northwest of Kenya was one of the most impacting experiences of her life, says Jewels.

“They just light up. They go to school, and they are so kind and smart and loving. Your hand was never empty. My children and I sponsor a child and she’s so sweet but there are so many kids who aren’t getting sponsors that still wanted to hold your hand," she said.

"We went out to different villages while we were there in the daytime and cooked food for some of these people who sang and danced and prayed… it was a sense of community and caring and hope. They held hope and faith and they just wanted food. They live in an area where it’s not like you can just grow your own food stuff, but they have faith that I’ve never seen before."

Jewels is planning to visit the Kenyan orphanage again in October 2020, this time with an all-Canadian crew. She will be organizing fundraisers and extra events to campaign.
