Two heroes help driver out of truck after fiery crash in Rutland

A heroic effort may have saved a man involved in a fiery Kelowna crash this week.

Monday night, a truck burst into flames after crashing into a Tim Hortons in Rutland. Many photos and videos were sent in of the incident, including this one from a man who jumped into action to help out the driver of the truck. 

The video shows a Tim Hortons employee who pulled the driver out of the truck, the Good Samaritan with a fire extinguisher, and the driver walking through the smouldering flames.

“We walked up, and the vehicle is fully engulfed in flames. There was smoke everywhere. I was at the gas station, I grabbed the fire extinguisher and ran right up to the truck and then started squirting where the guy was in the vehicle,” says the Good Samaritan, who wishes to remain anonymous.

“Then the guy from Tim Hortons opened the door. The (driver) was just sitting there with his eyes just looking around… like he was shocked or something.” 

Once the driver was out of the car, the two selfless helpers sat him down in a safe spot and waited for first responders.

The resident says this isn’t the first time he's jumped into action when someone was in trouble, but it was definitely the first time he's jumped into flames. 

“It’s something I’ve always done. If I see someone hurt or something, I try to stop it from happening… I don’t like just sitting there and watching something bad happening – especially if I can prevent it.”

The hero say he was a little concerned for his own safety, but "more worried about somebody in the vehicle burning to death.”

The two residents jumped into action at the right time. 

“A few seconds later, the tire blew up and the gas tank engulfed in more flames, so it was a crazy situation I put myself in, but I don’t regret it. I’m glad I didn’t get hurt or no one actually got seriously hurt."

“I’m pretty sure if we didn’t jump into action, me and the guy from Tim Hortons, it would’ve been a lot worse outcome for the guy in the vehicle.”
