It'll cost more to dump waste in Kelowna, West Kelowna in 2020

Dump fees going up

Fees for dumping waste and garbage at both the Glenmore Landfill in Kelowna and the Westside Transfer Station are going up in the new year.

New rates take effect Jan. 1.

In Kelowna, dumping fees will go up from $95 to $100 per tonne, with loads under 250kg now subject to a $12 minimum charge.

The increase is part of a three-year funding strategy approved by council in 2017 to help extend the life of the landfill.

On the Westside, The Regional District of Central Okanagan says fees at the Asquith will also be going up slightly to cover the tipping fee increase in Kelowna.

Beginning Jan. 1, fees for a bag of garbage will go up $0.50 to $4.50, medium garbage loads increase $2 to $18, large and extra large loads $5 to $50 and $80.

Also, fridges, freezers and other items with refrigerant will be accepted at no charge.

Drywall is no longer accepted at the Westside Transfer Station.
