City Hall protest set to demand more shelter for homeless

Protest for the homeless

A protest planned outside Kelowna City Hall today will demand a shelter for the homeless.

Jamie Lauren says there will also be a presence at the designated homeless camp beside the Kelowna Curling Club this morning, to defend the homeless in being allowed to keep their tents up, as opposed to tearing them down.

Lauren says she stopped by the tent camp Sunday night to drop off donations to help keep the homeless warm.

"When we dropped these items off, we stepped over top of people laying on plywood boards directly on the ground," Lauren said in a Facebook post.  "Some had a piece of foam to lay on, another I saw propped between two plastic chairs."

"There were about 30 people there last night, and that’s about 70 people missing, dispersed all over Kelowna to find warm shelter. THIS IS INHUMANE. I am so disappointed."

She hopes people will join the protest to show support for the homeless population, as the weather gets colder. 

"Say nothing if you don’t know what to say, but at least take a stand, show up ... Silence and ignoring people will freeze them to death."

The protest is planned for 1:30 p.m.
