Charges have yet to be laid in after a bomb scare in Kelowna

No charges in bomb scare

Charges have yet to be laid against a Surrey man, after a police officer found what he thought was a home-made pipe bomb inside a car on Highway 97 Tuesday morning.

The incident stemmed from a traffic stop at about 3:15 a.m. near Ambrosi Street. By noon that day, the red Toyota Echo had been moved to a vacant field near Springfield Road, and members of the RCMP bomb squad used a robot to remove the device and dispose of it.

Police have not said if the item turned out to be an explosive device.

The 38-year-old Surrey man driving the vehicle was taken into custody. He had been prohibited from driving at the time.

Police have recommended charges to the Crown, but the Crown has not yet laid any charges against him.

Cpl. Meghan Foster says the investigation is ongoing.
